“No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.”

Aesop

As we welcome December, a time when our “office” tends to shut down for a few weeks, our minds turn to what it truly means to belong to a community. Here at OneSpirit, community is a bond that holds us together—a commitment to share in both joys and challenges, and to offer support and presence for one another.

In that spirit, we’d like to share some news that brings our circle even closer. Nicola, a cherished member of the OneSpirit family, has recently been diagnosed with endometrial cancer and will begin chemotherapy on Thursday, December 14th under the care of the Royal Marsden team. As her community, let’s hold her in our thoughts, prayers, or messages of encouragement—whatever feels right to you. And for anyone else in need of this same support, know that we’re keeping you close in our hearts as well. You can always message us with any news that you’d like shared, and we will hold you in our hearts, and share the news for you. We believe in the power of love, and we know bringing people together can help heal.

With the holiday season upon us, we’ll be taking a short break, with the office closed from Monday, December 23rd through Friday, January 3rd. We look forward to reconnecting in January, renewed and ready to continue this journey together! Thank you for this beautiful year together.

Hope you enjoy the news!

TOGETHERNESS – WHEN LOVE WINS

I’ve been truly touched by all the messages of support and connection from my friends over this past week. The displays of togetherness, simple kindness within community and courageous acts of support for others, from everyday people that I know, have deeply moved me.

It’s clear that many of us see the cracks in the system and society and are determined not just to paper them over, but to dig deeper and understand the roots of these issues within ourselves and society.

There are no easy answers and we may have different perspectives on what the causes and solutions are. Displays of togetherness and connection are what many of us need now more than ever. Loneliness and orchestrated separation are prevalent worldwide.

But let’s be clear: togetherness isn’t about agreement, sameness or the saccharine sweetness of an easily said ‘love and light’. It’s not about avoiding tough conversations or pretending everything is perfect.

True togetherness allows for differences, embraces the messy, and acknowledges the real challenges we face. It’s about standing side by side, even when we don’t see eye to eye.

This has been the theme of this year for me and many of the people that I know. I’ve been actively holding spaces for deep loving connection with myself, loved ones, family, friends, colleagues, students and clients and the world around us.

One of the most powerful examples of working with the themes of togetherness and connection was the final retreat and ordination ceremony for the Class of 2024 OneSpirit Interfaith Ministers.

These newly ordained ministers are the beautiful people who I am pictured with alongside this post. These courageous souls, from different cultures, countries, faith paths, spiritual traditions, religions and backgrounds all came together despite their differences in service of their personal vow and the communities that they will serve.

I was ordained as a OneSpirit Minister in 2015 making a commitment to hold ceremony, ritual and spiritual counselling for people of any faith or none. This is integrated into my life and work in The Wild Wisdom with Monica Douglas and The Wild Wisdom Oracle with Monica Douglas.

This year I had the challenge and privilege of being a tutor for this class alongside my dear friend and fellow tutor Nicola Coombe this year. It was not easy. At all. This was hard work for everyone over the two years of training.

As well as the ecstasy of the Ordination there were breakdowns in communication, separation and distance as part of the journey. Yet, those who could hold on to the higher purpose of loving connection and togetherness reached their destination. We experienced loving togetherness and connection in a deep and profound way by including the differences as part of the tapestry.

I believe that if we open ourselves up to connection, it creates a space for us to make this world a better place one relationship at a time. It requires discernment and right timing and sometimes our conscious absence or silence is what is required to allow there to be meaningful connection, or for us to be able to see the fullness of our similarities and differences.

In order to experience connection I often go into nature. The teaching of our interconnectedness is very clear in the natural world. As an act of self-love and to foster a sense of togetherness, I’m committing to spending more time in nature with my loved ones, and I encourage you to do the same.

I am going to dive into the Peak District in Derbyshire before I go back to Barbados, with walking, ceremony, dancing and simple acts of being together.

Let’s continue to be in connection and make this world a better place, together.

OneSpirit Reflections, Student: Andrew

At the time of the full Harvest moon and a few days before the Autumn Equinox, whilst the energies of Lammas still swirled in the air, I stood on a beach near my home and held ceremony.

A solitary raven flew overhead and cronked in an inquisitive song at me.

This was an auspicious moment.

The intention for this ceremony had been brewing for a few weeks, and I’d like to say I had planned the timings but it was all coincidental and the main factor was a nice, sunny morning calling me to the beach and announcing that “now” was the time.

As I stood between tides and times, between sea and land and between earth and sky, I also stood at a transition point in my OneSpirit journey – halfway through my training as an Interfaith Minister. This ceremony was to mark that pivot point – giving thanks for all I had harvested over year 1 and declaring myself ready to cross the threshold into year 2.

It was a time of reflection and gratitude for the amazing, nourishing, soulful journey I had taken so far as part of Aspen class, the lessons I had learnt and skills developed as well as a reflection on the whole of my life’s journey that had brought me to this point.

It’s fitting that one of the major, personal gifts of year 1 that I expressed gratitude for, has been a developing love and gift for creating, crafting and holding ceremony, for others as part of my ministry but also purely for myself.

Ceremony in small ways as a means of recognising and marking the “Sacred ordinary” of my everyday life such as preparing a meal or lighting the fire.

Ceremony as a way of celebrating and honouring milestones in life such as moving from year 1 into year 2 and ceremony as part of the celebration of the turning seasons of our sacred Earth.

Another gift from year 1 has been my deepening relationship with the Earth, but in a particular way – this bit of Earth, this beach by my home. She is an integral part of my ministry and has held me through so much over this past year. She has witnessed and been the site of a lot of my ceremonies, she has heard my prayers, my laughter and my tears. She is the place of pilgrimage, of meditation and contemplation, being both my temple and the face of The Divine.

So, as I sit here sipping my cacao, shaking my ceremonial rattle and whispering prayers to the wind, I wonder what raven thinks!

OneSpirit Reflections, Minister: Holly
In July, the Onespirit community came together to celebrate the joyful ordination of a new class of Ministers. Huge congratulations to the Class of 2024!
x
For me, this year marked my first anniversary of being ordained as an Interfaith Minister with OneSpirit. The anniversary of this milestone has felt really significant to me and has prompted a lot of deep reflection.
x
During that week or so last July, I grasped the sense that I was doing something that I was ‘meant’ to be doing with my time on this earth. It was a remarkable experience and one of the best weeks of my life.
x
No wonder, then, that I felt a little numb, a little deflated afterwards. The height of the high sometimes dictates the depth of the low needed to return to homeostasis.
x
The year after the course is often called the informal ‘third year’ of the course, and I think I understand why now. In the absence of the intensity of the course proper, there was a profound deepening into the lessons that I learned over the two years. Little cracks in my heart and self were broken wide open. I missed the deeply supportive container of the course and my beloved class. At the same time, I began having difficulty finding work and struggling with my mental health, making it feel impossible to consider ‘starting’ my public ministry (though of course, it started long ago). So all told, the year following ordination was more challenging than I could have expected.
x
It took a while to recognise that there was no ‘going back’ after the course ended. Accepting the call of the course was like diving into the ocean. The course itself may be a two-year wild ride in the slipstream, but the end of the course doesn’t deposit you back at the shoreline – it shoots you far out into open ocean.
x
This anniversary has given me a new opportunity to grieve the end of the course, which meant so much to me, but which maybe I wasn’t ready to mourn at the time. At the same time, it allowed me to celebrate all that was so beautiful about it, and start to look ahead to what’s next.
x
I’m sure the informal third year works itself in different ways in all of us. For me, at least, it feels like the informal ‘third year’ is the true conclusion of my training – though not of course of my learning or growing.
x
I share my experience in the hope that our newly ordained Ministers might work with the powerful energy of their third year in the way that support them, and that if they do find it challenging, they’ll reach out. I for one would be very happy to listen.
x
A deepest thank you to everyone and everything that has held me during my informal third year. Here’s to whatever this new phase holds – for all of us.

Human Rights Day: Honouring Humanity’s Shared Spirit

On December 10th, we join the global community in marking Human Rights Day, a day rooted in the fundamental principles of dignity, equality, and freedom for all. This annual observance reminds us of our shared responsibility to uphold these values—principles woven into the very mission of OneSpirit Interfaith Foundation, fostering understanding and compassion across spiritual boundaries.

Human Rights Day holds special significance for us, as OneSpirit was formed in the wake of the Holocaust, inspired by the resilience of communities worldwide as they began to heal from unimaginable human rights abuses. Our commitment to honouring all faiths and spiritual paths is our way of contributing to a world where everyone’s voice, belief, and personhood are respected. We recognize that affirming human rights isn’t only a global pursuit; it’s one we enact in small ways each day.

Consider this excerpt from Maya Angelou’s Human Family as a meditation on this day: “We are more alike, my friends, than we are unlike.”

As we hold Human Rights Day in our hearts, let us remember the truth in her words. The commitment to human rights is the recognition of our shared humanity, our collective struggles, and the profound beauty in our differences.

Bodhi Day: Celebrating the Light of Awakening

On December 8th, many around the world observe Bodhi Day, marking the day when Siddhartha Gautama, after years of searching, achieved enlightenment under the Bodhi tree. Known as bodhi, or “awakening,” this state of clarity and compassion transformed him into the Buddha, the “Awakened One.” For those dedicated to spiritual growth, Bodhi Day offers inspiration and a reminder of our own capacity for insight, peace, and kindness.

The Buddha’s path to enlightenment was one of dedicated spiritual practice and introspection—a journey familiar to many who seek deeper meaning and self-understanding. Bodhi Day encourages us to pause and reflect on our own paths, to cultivate mindfulness, and to nurture wisdom and compassion in ourselves and our communities. The symbolism of Bodhi Day is simple yet profound: through focused self-awareness and meditation, we can begin to see beyond the distractions of everyday life, opening up to inner peace and a sense of unity with the world. The Buddha’s enlightenment is not just an ancient story; it represents a possibility for each of us to seek greater awareness and compassion in our lives.

In honour of Bodhi Day, here is a simple reflection to carry into your day: “May I awaken to the light within me, the peace that rests in every moment. May my heart open to the world in compassion, and may I walk the path of kindness with every step.”

“I did the OneSpirit training 2016- 2018 and thoroughly enjoyed it! I was particularly drawn to the course because of the ’spiritual awakening’ aspect and I resonated strongly with Miranda Macpherson’s love of the non-dual wisdom. She had a powerful awakening experience in the cave of Ramana Maharshi. There is a wisdom and grace that flowed through from that experience, in my view, that permeated into the depth and universality of the OneSpirit family.

Our world is crying out for unity and peace at the moment and I have a sense that a great awakening really is upon us!  This book is my contribution to ushering in this new dawn. Against a background of immutable, ineffable infinite silence that is already available and alive!

Full love to all my wonderful class of 2018 and to the wider family of OneSpirit. Please do support this work with likes and comments on the YouTube book trailer  – that would mean a lot! Thank you everyone as this is helping to get this message out to the world

Happy festive season of light and love.

In gratitude and love, Swarupa

Sacred Sister Journal Offering

Rev. Laura Ireland, ordained in 2022, has been dedicated to building Sacred Sister, a thriving women’s community, since her early days in training with OneSpirit. Sacred Sister began as a free Facebook community and has since blossomed into a space that brings women together through gatherings, retreats, and training. Honouring the self, sisterhood and nature, at the heart of this movement lies Laura’s beautifully crafted Sacred Code, designed to support a new paradigm for healing the sister wound many of us carry as women.

A devoted journaler herself, Laura has long valued the power of journaling in her own healing and spiritual journey. This year, inspired by divine timing, she felt called to co-create a special journal for Sacred Sister with the help of 13 remarkable female British artists. This collaboration has given birth to a journal that is much more than a book; it is a sacred space to write, reflect, and weave affirmations, prayer, and ritual into daily life.

The journal’s pre-launch has been a beautiful success, with the first 100 copies sold at a special price of £33. While the regular price will be £37.95, Laura extends a heartfelt offer to the OneSpirit Community to purchase at the same pre-launch price. With each journal, you will receive a personal message from Laura, welcoming you into this sacred space.

Sounding the Medicine Wheel – Online Course Offering
I would love to share some information with you all about a course I’m offering starting in November. Sound Healing with your own voice is a really powerful way of shifting energy when you want to heal your body, transform emotional patterns, change the way you think, or deepen your connection to the divine.
x
Using your voice in this way sets up a deep resonance within the body which works directly with the parasympathetic nervous system via the vagus nerve. It lowers your blood pressure, slows your heart rate and releases lots of feel-good hormones.  It releases stress from the physical and energy bodies and just makes you feel really peaceful and calm. Sound has also been used throughout history as a medium to connect with the divine and naturally creates altered states of consciousness. I share different ways of working with your voice, music and instruments to do all of these things.
x
The course is structured around a Medicine Wheel – honouring eight sacred powers and directions – and uses sonic spiritual technologies from the world’s wisdom traditions I have collected since 2007. It includes 8×3 hour live sessions which are recorded to YouTube and a 100-page manual. We will meet twice a month for three hours to dive deep into Sacred Space using Sacred Sound to open our hearts, minds and souls to the Divine within, without and all around us. P.S. – I’m offering a 20% discount for OneSpirit members!
