Honouring Our Elders: International Day of Older Persons

Sep 30, 2024

On 1st October, we mark the International Day of Older Persons – a moment to reflect not only on the elders around us but also on the influence of those who came before them. Our ancestors, through their wisdom, struggles, and triumphs, have shaped the world we inherit today. Their experiences and guidance live on, offering us a roadmap to navigate life’s complexities with resilience and grace.

As we reflect on our ancestors’ legacy, we also recognise that their teachings continue to flow through the generations. The wisdom they passed down, whether through stories, customs, or quiet example, carries a timeless quality, reminding us of the values that anchor our humanity. In many cultures, ancestors are revered as spiritual guides, reminding us of the importance of humility, respect, and a deep connection to the earth and each other.

Yet, the relationship between generations is not one-sided. Younger generations bring fresh perspectives, energy, and new ways of thinking. As we honour the wisdom of the past, we also embrace the innovation and creativity of the present. Younger people carry forward the traditions of their ancestors while shaping them to meet the needs of today’s world, ensuring that the legacy of the past evolves and endures.

At OneSpirit, we believe that this exchange between past and present is sacred. Each generation has something to offer – whether it’s the guidance of the ancestors or the vision of the youth. By embracing both, we create a harmonious balance that strengthens our communities and honours the interconnectedness of all life.

On this International Day of Older Persons, let’s reflect on the influence of our ancestors and the wisdom they imparted, while celebrating the fresh contributions of younger generations. Together, we walk a path shaped by those who came before us and continue to be inspired by those yet to come.

With heartfelt insight, she highlights how true togetherness is not about agreement or avoiding difficult conversations, but about embracing differences and standing in loving connection, even through the messiness of life. Monica also speaks to the importance of nature in fostering a sense of unity and self-love, and encourages us to find solace in the interconnectedness of the natural world. Through her reflection, she offers a message of hope, reminding us that by embracing connection, we can create a better world—one relationship at a time.

As they celebrate the anniversary of this milestone, they explore the highs and lows experienced during what many refer to as the informal "third year" of training. With heartfelt honesty, they describe the challenges of adjusting to life after the intense two-year course, confronting feelings of loss, and the gradual realisation that the path of ministry does not end with ordination—it evolves.
