OneSpirit Staff Reflections: Kailee

Jan 29, 2025

Before joining OneSpirit Interfaith Foundation, I had the privilege of wearing many hats across different parts of the world—each role contributing to the path I now walk. I’ve always been captivated by diverse cultures, which led me to pursue a degree in Global Studies at Arizona State University. This gave me the freedom to explore new places while earning my education—an experience that deepened my appreciation for how different cultures shape our world.

After completing my studies, I taught English to children in both Italy and China, which was a transformative experience that deepened my connection to the power of communication. During my time in both countries, I also fell head over heels in love with travel — a love that I’ve yet to outgrow.

Before coming to OneSpirit, I worked in Washington, D.C., as an Inclusion Program Coordinator. My work there focused on advocating for marginalized communities, including youth, individuals with disabilities, Indigenous people, and women. I remain passionate about intersectional justice, and much of my career has been centered on advocating for these voices. The experience was not only fulfilling but also taught me the importance of inclusive communication in fostering connection and positive social change.

However, during my time in my previous career, I found myself increasingly drawn to the more creative aspects of the job. I wanted to manage the website, grow our community, source images that evoked emotions, and handle communications — though I didn’t fully know what that role was or what it would entail.

These experiences, along with my strong identity as an intersectional feminist, sparked my desire to explore the intersections of culture, religion, and gender. This led me to Scotland, where I earned a Postgraduate Diploma in History, focusing on marriage, gender, and sexuality in the Middle Ages.

While in Scotland, I stumbled upon OneSpirit Interfaith Foundation. Immediately, the word “OneSpirit” caught my attention. Although I hadn’t encountered the term “interfaith” before, I felt an undeniable connection to the word “OneSpirit.” I knew I had to learn more about this organization, whether through work, collaboration, or study. At the time, I was already a student at the University of Edinburgh, and also seeking a job that wouldn’t require working U.S. hours (which was really burning me out). So when I discovered that OneSpirit was hiring for a Communications role, I felt it was serendipity — and that it was meant to be.

Joining OneSpirit has been a transformative experience for me, both professionally and personally. The work we do here, grounded in interfaith values and the belief in the inherent worth of all beings, resonates deeply with me. I’ve had the privilege of translating that passion for inclusive communication into creating content that sparks connection and fosters a sense of community. The role has not only enriched my career but has also offered me a sense of alignment with my personal values — empowering individuals through thoughtful, inclusive, and intentional communication.

I feel incredibly lucky to be part of a team that works tirelessly to create spaces where all are welcome, and where each voice matters. Every day, I’m inspired by the deep commitment to spiritual growth and service that I see in our ministers, staff, and community members. I become a better person every day by learning from my coworkers, and by growing through the challenges we face together here. Working here has not only given me a platform to continue my advocacy but has also reinforced my belief in the power of empathy and shared wisdom.

I find myself wishing I could work more hours, as coming from the States, where 70+ hour work weeks are common, I’ve never had so much free time. I’m still figuring out who I am and how I want to spend it. Until that realization comes, you’ll likely find me with my nose in a book, experimenting with new vegan recipes, or revisiting my favorite Indiana Jones films (because who doesn’t love a good adventure?). As a solo traveler at heart (though I now travel with my partner) I’m always seeking new connections and exploring different cultural perspectives.

I’m excited to continue growing with OneSpirit, to deepen my journey here, and to discover the many marvelous ways we can all show up for each other and make the world a kinder place.

Women’s History Month: Indigenous Women Leaders

Indigenous women have long been central to the spiritual and cultural life of their communities, yet their leadership has often been overlooked. From ancient traditions to contemporary movements, women are reclaiming spiritual authority and revitalising practices passed down through generations. In communities such as the Lakota and Haudenosaunee, women have historically held positions of spiritual leadership, and today, figures like Winona LaDuke and Tiana Ngata continue to lead efforts to preserve and strengthen Indigenous spiritual practices. As these women reclaim their rightful roles, they ensure that Indigenous spirituality remains a powerful force in today’s world.

Women’s History Month: Women in Spiritual Traditions

Women have played a crucial role in shaping spiritual traditions, from revered figures like Kuan Yin and Táhirih to trailblazing leaders such as Harriet Tubman and Phyllis Curott. Despite facing exclusion, women continue to reclaim leadership roles and push for gender equality within spiritual communities, ensuring traditions remain inclusive and vibrant. This Women’s History Month, we honour their resilience and lasting influence.

Month of Ministry ‘War’ Reflection

In Day 21 of #MonthOfMinistry, the prompt "War" reflects on the internal battles we sometimes fight, between our true selves and the identities imposed upon us. The author of this post, Birch Pathway Student Justin, shares a personal struggle, likening the inner conflict to the external wars that ravage our world, both born from the destructive belief that peace can only come through conquest. The message encourages finding true peace not through domination, but through understanding, justice, and love, reminding us that we must first reconcile with ourselves to end the wars we impose on others.
