University of Leiden Research

Oct 4, 2023

My name is Judith and I am a 27 year old PhD student at Leiden University, The Netherlands. As part of myresearch project, I am comparing experiences of Islamophobia in London and Paris with a particular focus on how government measures to fight terrorism are based on anti-Muslim and racist stereotypes and thus discriminate against Muslim citizens.

I am still looking for individuals who would be willing to talk to me about their experience, e.g., being stopped and searched on the street or singled out during airport controls. The interview would be online (zoom) and last around 45 minutes.

The questions will cover a range of topics from participants’ views on British counter-terrorism policies over government and media discourses on Islam to personal experiences of Islamophobia and discrimination.

The only condition is that they are Muslim and based in London or the greater surroundings. Of course, everything would be 100 % anonymous and no identifiable information would be stored. The results will be published in pseudonymised form, and it will not be possible for anyone but myself to link them to the original interviews.

I realise that this is a very sensitive topic, but I think it is tragic how often Muslim voices are excluded from public discourses on this issue and I believe that sharing personal experiences and thoughts on that topic would be a chance to change this just a little bit.

Of course, we could also just schedule an informal call first in case you have further questions about my research, the confidentiality and anonymity of the interviews or how I am using the data. Get in touch with me here!

Honouring Our Elders: International Day of Older Persons

On the International Day of Older Persons, we reflect on the wisdom and influence of our ancestors, whose guidance shapes the world we live in today. Their teachings remind us of the enduring values that connect us across time. At the same time, younger generations bring fresh energy and innovation, ensuring that this wisdom evolves. By honouring both past and present, we create a balanced and harmonious future where each generation contributes to the richness of our shared journey.

OneSpirit Minister Reflections: Holly

In this first of our "OneSpirit Reflections" series, OneSpirit minister Holly Chetan-Welsh reflects on the profound journey that followed their ordination, marking their first year as an ordained Interfaith Minister. As they celebrate the anniversary of this milestone, they explore the highs and lows experienced during what many refer to as the informal "third year" of training. With heartfelt honesty, they describe the challenges of adjusting to life after the intense two-year course, confronting feelings of loss, and the gradual realisation that the path of ministry does not end with ordination—it evolves. Their reflection offers insight and encouragement to newly ordained ministers, reminding them to embrace this transformative period and seek support when needed.

International Day of Charity

Far surpassing conventional educational roles, OneSpirit offers a transformative Ministry Training Programme and various workshops aimed at encouraging understanding and spiritual growth among diverse communities. Charity, as seen through OneSpirit's lens, encompasses more than financial contributions; it's about sharing knowledge, fostering spiritual development, and building a shared humanity. As we celebrate this day, we're inspired to partake in acts of kindness, whether by donating, volunteering, or engaging with OneSpirit's enriching educational content, reinforcing our commitment to a more inclusive and compassionate world.
